Thought Piece: Economic Mobility Convening
By: Ze Min Xiao
The Center for Economic Opportunity and Belonging, Ze Min Xiao and Marin Christenson (research consultant), were honored to join economic mobility practitioners around the country for a joint convening of the Reinventing Our Communities Cohort, a program of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and the Upward Mobility Initiative, a program of the Urban Institute.
Key takeaways:
Local leadership and innovation are key drivers.
Business is critical – the value proposition for business partners.
Humanize data and avoid a single story.
Urban Institute: The Upward Mobility Initiative empowers local leaders with data and tools to improve upward mobility.
Resources:
Upward Mobility Framework provides an evidence-based foundation including the three-part definition of economic and social mobility, a focus on racial equity, five pillars of support people need from their communities, and 24 predictors of the strength of those pillars that communities can influence.
Upward Mobility Data Dashboard provides metrics for those 24 predictors in every county and more than 480 cities in the US to understand and measure community conditions that advance or inhibit upward mobility.
Toolkit for Increasing Upward Mobility is a resource to guide local leaders in taking action to boost upward mobility in their community.
Opportunity Insights: the Opportunity Atlas shows local mobility trends and outcomes across the United States.
Results for America: the Economic Mobility Catalog provides evidence and case studies of how communities and programs are advancing upward mobility across multiple policy areas.
The Center for Economic Opportunity and Belonging is excited to apply our learnings into action. Keep up with our work at www.belonginutah.org.
