Thought Piece: Economic Opportunity: 2023 - 2024 New Americans Task Force Progress Report

At the heart of Utah’s growth strategy lies a strong commitment to economic mobility. The New American Task Force (Task Force) has made significant strides in 2023–2024 to remove barriers and expand access to opportunities so our new American community members in Utah can be part of Utah’s prosperity.

One key accomplishment was a statewide survey and report on internationally trained professionals, in partnership with World Education Services (WES) and the Utah Department of Commerce. The survey, which engaged over 6,000 participants, revealed persistent hurdles that immigrants face when trying to translate international qualifications into U.S. careers.

From recommending industry-specific English training to advocating for licensing exams in native languages and coaching programs, the Task Force is developing tangible, people-centered solutions. These steps not only strengthen Utah’s workforce but also affirm the value of every individual’s global experience.

This work is more than policy, it’s a pathway to ensure everyone can thrive in our beautiful state.
