Thought Piece: Safio Hassan

As a marketing student at the University of Utah and a media creator with a background in Video & Radio Production from Salt Lake Community College, I’ve always been drawn to the power of storytelling. My work as a social media marketer and content creator—especially in the sports world—has shown me how digital media can do more than entertain. It can connect people, shape perception, and build communities across differences.
“The stories we tell—and the ones we choose not to tell—shape who is seen, who is valued, and who belongs.”
To me, storytelling has never been just about content creation. It is about visibility and belonging. The stories we tell—and the ones we choose not to tell—shape who feels seen, who feels valued, and who feels included. In a digital world where attention is constant and messages spread instantly, social media holds immense power. It can divide people through misunderstanding, or it can bring them together through empathy, shared experience, and human connection.
That understanding is what drew me to the Center for Economic Opportunity & Belonging. I was inspired by its mission to create a Utah where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and feel a genuine sense of belonging. I’ve come to understand belonging not as something abstract, but as something built through representation and visibility. When people see their stories reflected in media, they are reminded that they matter and that they are part of a larger community.
Through my work in marketing, I hope to contribute to that mission by amplifying stories that highlight connection, community impact, and shared humanity. Whether through video production, digital campaigns, or social media storytelling, I see every piece of content as an opportunity to bridge gaps between people from different backgrounds and lived experiences.
More than anything, I am excited to grow within a team that is committed to collaboration, opportunity, and belonging. I hope my work helps create spaces—both online and offline—where people feel seen, valued, and connected to something bigger than themselves.
